Violence in Schools-A Worldwide Epidemic

Five months after another school shooting in which Jeff Weise, 16, killed his grandfather and companion, a teacher, a security guard, 5 students, and then committed suicide, another school shooting has occurred in Jacksboro, Tennessee. On Tuesday, November 8, around 2:11 pm, Ken Bartley Jr. who is 15, shot and killed his assistant principle and seriously wounded two other administrators at Campbell County high school. This is one newest of the twenty-three major acts of school violence resulting in death since 1996 in the United States alone, reported by http://www.keystosaferschools.com Maps of School shootings. These are all tragic deaths lead by teenagers like us, some of these kids are only twelve years old.
Sadly these tragic tales aren?t only set in our country. Have you heard of Robert Steinhaeuser? He was a 19 year old from Erfurt, Germany. On April 26, 2002he came to Johann Gutenberg secondary school and killed 13 teachers, two students, and one policeman; he also injured ten others. He later killed himself. What about the fifteen year old student who killed his teacher and then later shot himself March 2000 in Branneburg, Germany. He didn't die and lies in a coma since the day he shot himself. The most famous school shooting, at least to us, occurred on Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School in unincorporated Jefferson County, Colorado, near Denver and Littleton, Colorado, in the United States. Two teenage students killed twelve students, a teacher, and wounded twenty four others before later committing suicide.
How is it possible that it has crept into the minds of students like us that to end our problems we have to kill? What is the cause of that problem? Many blame gun control, and violent video games and movies. In April 19999 the families of students killed in a school shooting sued several entertainment companies charging that violence in video games, internet porn, and a The Basketball Diaries contributed to the attack. Is the media really to blame? What about the one third of the families in Canada own a gun? Japan, France, England, and many other countries watch the same movies we and play the same video games as well. Are they really to blame? Yes and no, they do contribute to school violence but don?t take the full blame. Many of the young people who are participate in the deadly school violence are affected by bullying and abuse. They are people who aren't accepted by society. Many were troubled but did not receive the help they needed, either because they didn?t feel safe or because there was not enough help for them at their school due to cuts on school funds.
The big question is how do we deal with these people? How should our courts decide how try these people in court? As adult or children? According to law a fifteen year old male cannot decide go into a liquor store and buy a pack of cigarettes or a can of beer because they don?t know any better. If a fifteen year old doesn't know any better about buying a cigar, what makes the court say they know any better about killing a person? There is a big difference. They should not be tried as an adult for killing someone because it contradicts what the people who come up with these laws are trying to say. All you do is take away the education of the children because if they don?t go to jail they will never be able to find a school that is willing to take them back? What they need is help, they need to find someone they can talk to and find the necessary help.

Eric Harris, one of the shooter from Columbine, wrote about his plans in his blog and website. Students can now help prevent a tragedy at their school, or other schools by calling PAX's anonymous 1-866-SPEAK-UP hotline if they see a "sign" of school violence .Over 950,000 students bring a weapon to school every 30 days and over 1.4 million students are threatened or injured with a weapon every year, according to estimates based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics. If you are threatened or know someone who is this hotline also helps you, they notify the proper authorities to come and help you.
