10 Books They Don't Want You to Read

In 2004, libraries and schools received 547 written "challenges" to books stocked on their shelves, a stunning 20 percent increase from a year earlier. While the books haven't been banned outright, there are individuals and groups who don't want you to read them. This week, the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom is calling attention to these books and why some people want them removed from the shelves.

Three of the 10 most challenged books were cited for homosexual themes, which is the highest number in a decade. Sexual content and offensive language remain the most frequent reasons for seeking removal of books from schools and public libraries.

The books, in order of most frequently challenged, are:
1. "The Chocolate War" by Robert Cormier for sexual content, offensive language, religious viewpoint, being unsuited to age group and violence.
2. "Fallen Angels" by Walter Dean Myers, for racism, offensive language and violence.
3. "Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture" by Michael A. Bellesiles, for inaccuracy and political viewpoint.
4. "Captain Underpants" series by Dav Pilkey, for offensive language and modeling bad behavior.
5. "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky, for homosexuality, sexual content and offensive language.
6. "What My Mother Doesn't Know" by Sonya Sones, for sexual content and offensive language.
7. "In the Night Kitchen" by Maurice Sendak, for nudity and offensive language.
8. "King & King" by Linda de Haan and Stern Nijland, for homosexuality.
9. "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou, for racism, homosexuality, sexual content, offensive language and unsuited to age group.
10. "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, for racism, offensive language and violence.

The top 10 "challenged" authors from 1990 to 2004 are (in order): Alvin Schwartz, Judy Blume, Robert Cormier, J.K. Rowling, Michael Willhoite, Katherine Paterson, Stephen King, Maya Angelou, R.L. Stine and John Steinbeck.


My goodness the summer went by really fast. So many things happened. but I'll cut it short seeing that I feel really ba d saying some of these things.

For the first thing my cat Thomas was run over. I still miss him even though it's been about three weeks since he died. I miss him so much he was my favorite. Well they say that he was run over but I dont think so. Its like someone beat him with a stick or something because only his face was messed up. Great now Im crying. Not because he's dead but because someone can be so cruel to a creature who cant defend himself. I feel bad for his brothers. They like still look for him. Its sad. but at least we found his body and got to say a proper good bye. right. thats the best thing right. We could think he got lost and still be worried. But he left us a present, or maybe a few. His girlfriend is expecting. Only a couple of weeks from now and she'll be ready to pop. lol.

Well schools great. I finally got publications and psychology after trying to get it for my whole highschool career. lol.yeah. Dominique got a boyfriend during th summer but he's going to college in Arizona so she's always sad about that. seriously why get a boyfriend if your gonna be bummed about it the whole time. really. My mom says something really funny she say Amor de lejos son pendejos which you can lool lol. Well I have nothing against it. but you know its just stupid to not be together. A lot of things can happen. well to other things I am no longer VICE PRESIDENT of the W.H.A.T club(Westmoor High Artistic Talent) Im THE PRESIDENT! woo! lol. yeah.

well I g2g I have homework and stuff. Sorry I havent gotten to peoples journal Ive been so busy. But I will try to get to you as soon as possible.

ps. did anyone see the 1st episode of Americas Next Top Model I can believe whats her name made out with that other girl(havent learned their names) I didnt really like some of the makeovers but hey Im no expert. I really dont like lisa either. but hey, cant do anything about it right. lol.
