Missing NYC

  • 04/22/09 5:44 pm
Well basically....I've been MIA from the Kiwibox offices and pretty much from the real world for one too many weeks! Only kidding, I wish I could stay in Cayman FOREVER!

I had an amazing extended spring break and now I'm back to the real world. Back to school, back to tests, and back to teachers.

What would you do on an island for 2 weeks? Well let me fill you in on what went down on my vacation. I did an immense amount of snorkeling like usual, visited my Aunt and Uncle who are permanently stationed in Cayman, caught up on my sleep, fine tuned my "people watching skills," ate one too many mahi mahi dishes, and collected the beautiful rays to complete my tan.

Once the plane touched down on NY turf I was excited to get back in the swing of things...any longer and I might never have gotten back, Ya digggg! It was cold, dark, and rainy the last thing I'd want to come back to but it was time.

IT'S EARTH DAY...MONTH -and I LOVE being flooded with eco-friendly/ go-green advice, but what I love more is seeing all the excitement of prom!

Being that PROM is right around the corner. This issue we've got awesome Prom tips/tricks/and fashions that will deff keep you hot at your prom.

Not to mention Kiwibox has the hottest hair and make-up styles from a 5th Avenue pro. So be sure to check out all the madness Kiwibox VJ Ryan and myself had while getting our makeovers!

HASTA LA VISTA BABY-

P.S. I know I know, I promise NEVER to say "Hasta...Baby" ever again.

Britney Spears Overdue

  • 03/25/09 6:42 pm
Hiya!!

So it's been a bit longer than a week since I saw Britney's Circus concert and i've deff, got some mixed feelings!

THE BAD:

1. She is not the Britney that she once was. The reason I feel this way is because she was like a robot! You could hear her counting steps in her head, she was a tad bit disoriented.

2. I personally feel like she didn't make any connections with this audience. The closest she came to connecting was a half hour into her concert when she gave a "What's going on New Jersey" shout-out.

3. LIP SYNC. I expected she would be lip syncing the majority of the concert, but seriously on the slow songs too? It sounded like the "old" Britney, but I'd say it was a slip-up when her mouth wasn't moving but the song continued. (And this happened on a slow song.)

4.Though I had great seats about 10 rows back from the stage, the stage was a circle. So when she was on the opposite side of the stage all you saw was her back. She made her rounds, but maybe the fact I couldn't see her face the whole time contributed to the lack of connection.

THE GOOD:

1. She looked HOT! She she did put any effort into her dirty dancing moves it worked! And her hair was also looking quiet fresh ;)

2. The Pussycat Dolls. Now this is one talented group! After watching them perform with such energy and motivation I'm not sure Brit could compete at all. I also loved how they ended their set with "Jai Ho" (I think that's the spelling) from the movie "Slumdog Millionaire".

3. The opening "circus acts." These acts officially put me in the mood for the circus. Just think of "The Cirque Du Soleil."

4. Her backup dancers/performers. THANK GOD, for them! They entertained me even when I was getting antsy for her to make her way back to my side of the stage.

Overall, I had a great time at the concert despite "the bad." But I probably would have had more fun at a Lil Wayne concert. I would've included a sweet photo but my camera died!!

I'll be MIA from KIWIBOX HQ for the next 2 weeks! But considering the weather we've been having in NY I won't mind laying on a beach doing absolutely NOTHING!

So on that note...

PEACE OUT NY! I'll see you when the flowers start blooming!!

Crazy Hectic Week!

  • 03/13/09 6:26 pm
Hey Hey everyone!!!

Sooo i'm Kiwibox VJ Kylie, and I loveeee what my job allows me to do. In my opinion we've got the most relaxed office enviro in all of NYC!

This week's issue spring cleaning is right up my ally. I can't wait to see the leaves start turning green again! The second I see this means summer is right around the corner, and i can start re-organizing all of my draws and cleaning out my closet!! I CAN'T WAIT!

But recently I feel like it's been taking longer than usual to get here and this week hasn't made it any easier...

I've had the longest week ever! I'm in my junior year at FIT and we've got a few weeks left until spring break...but until then it's STRAIGHT tests and projects.

This week alone I spent hours and hours in the library, had a philosophy test, micro test, and 2 more on the way. And if that's not enough lets just add some additional homework into the mix!

What are teachers thinking???? I know what i'm thinking...SPRING BREAK!!!! And it really can't come soon enough! Oooh how hard it is to stop yourself from day dreaming about the Caribbean islands, especially when it's a rainy afternoon and you're sitting in class!

So i'm totally agreeing with what everyone else at Kiwibox has already said TGIF!!!!

I'm going to end this on a good note, when I reveal my plans for tomorrow evening....INSERT DRUM ROLL PLEASE....

I'm heading off to THE CIRCUS, BRITNEY SPEARS CIRCUS! Yup, Britney Spear's Circus tour has finally hit the NY area. So thanks to my amazing sister Jaed, we will be sitting just a few rows back from the stage (so I think.)

I have a feeling that my next journal entry will be non-stop Circus talk...So stay on the look out!

P.S, we've got some great new music interviews coming up that I can't wait to talk about!

A day in the life of Star Magazine Editor, Taryn Adler.

  • 03/05/09 3:37 pm
As a VJ for KiwiBox, my job isn't all about interviewing big musical acts and celebs. I get to go to really cool places and speak with others editors and reporters about how they got their start in the journalism field. Sure, I see the daily inner workings of Kiwibox and I know how all of our editors got their in into this fabulous field, but for research's sake I am collecting other stories to help teens like you and me get our own in. I had already talked with Delaina Dixon from OK! and now I was set to speak with Taryn Adler.

Chatting up Taryn Adler, beauty and fashion editor of Star Magazine, I knew the first thing I had to ask her was how she felt about her job.

Her smile grew bigger as her eyes brightened, enthusiastically she replied, “OBSESSED!”

Most girls, including myself, enjoy keeping up with the latest juicy celebrity gossip as well as everything trendy. If you’re obsessed with the world of beauty and fashion and have a flare for writing why not pursue it-- that’s what Taryn did!

Contrary to most young girls’ or guys’ beliefs, there are jobs that pay you to obsess 24/7 about everything style related. Taryn filled me in on all that goes on behind the pages of Star Magazine’s “Style” section and how she arrived at her dream job.

Early like usual, I sat in the waiting room of Star Magazine. Though I wouldn’t really consider it waiting, since I had no problem keeping busy by examining the room. Its blown-up Star Magazine covers lined the walls and bright colors for spring filled a never-ending clothing rack.

A petite woman styled in chic attire from head to toe greeted us. With a firm handshake and bright smile she said, “Hi I’m Taryn.” I then followed her into the conference room and we instantly began chatting even before I could get my recorder out! One comment led to a conversation about Molly Simms and then another led to her favorite beauty products, I knew staying on track might be difficult with someone so gregarious and passionate about what she does.

A typical day at Star Magazine begins at 9:30am with some brainstorming for upcoming articles. Throughout her day Taryn views tons of celebrity film, researches product reviews and does a lot of writing! If that’s not enough, being editor of beauty and fashion means, Taryn is in charge of the style section’s nine page spread! She executes the final stories and approves the final layout design.

But Taryn’s day doesn’t just end when she leaves the office. She filled me in that two to three nights a week she attends business functions including dinners and launch events related with something new in the world of fashion and beauty.

So how did she land this dream job? Taryn was an English major at Columbia University and took journalism classes as an undergrad. Her passion for writing landed her an internship at Cosmopolitan Magazine where she was the beauty intern for a year. After graduating school she worked as the editorial assistant at Cosmo Style, (a spin-off of Cosmo.)

Just as Cosmo Style was wrapping up, Taryn ran into an old friend who gave her the heads-up that Star Magazine was hiring. With a background in beauty and fashion, she applied and got the job. Taryn became the editorial assistant at Star. And it was just a coincidence that she happens to live right across from Star Magazine’s offices (talk about a quick commute!)

Taryn said, “I had just about put in my yearly ‘dues’ and the beauty editor for Star happened to be leaving,” so Taryn hinted to her boss she wanted the job. The outcome? Taryn was promoted to the job she’d always dreamed about.

She emphasized that for any student wanting to break into the industry, internships are your key.

So, the next big question. Has this beauty maven ever fallen victim to bad trends? Thinking, she begins to laugh and admits that she still wears scrunchies and side ponytails. Now if you’ve ever seen this Sex and the City episode, you might remember Carrie mentioning you can always spot a tourist based on the scrunchie.

Scrunchies aside, Taryn’s style was impeccable. She told us her trick to maintaining her skin and hair was to “become regimented.” She suggested trying to stick with a daily/nightly routine.

Some of Taryn’s keys to her healthy routine include:

· Washing your face every night. Not removing make-up can lead to unwanted blemishes and zits.

· Use a toner, to cleanse the skin. Dirt builds up throughout the day; minimizing build up can be as easy as cleaning your cell phone screen.

· Take your VITAMINS!

A few of Taryn’s style favorites:

· Dressing for comfort.

· Casual bohemian, relaxed clothes.

· Layering.

· The Olsen twin’s closet. (Including their latest clothing lines.)

Her two passions were writing and beauty, so why not write about beauty? From the first day of her internship at Cosmo, Taryn Adler knew this was what she wanted to do, and now she’s living out her dream. Taryn believes interning, “luck,” and determination were a major part of getting her to where she is today.
