Fine Arts are Important

If Not as Classes, Try Clubs

It's that time again: the time when it is no longer possible to sleep late and do nothing all day long. The long, hot days are turning colder, and pools are being closed up. Yes, that's right: it's time for school.

That means time for books, homework, schoolwork, papers, essays, reading, long days at school and long homework hours after it. This can stress many people out, which is one reason why so many students enjoy music, theater, and art in the school curriculum. However, due to budgeting, some school administrations are starting to do away with these programs, because they feel that students should be focusing on the more important subjects, such as English and Math. But, is this fair? Is it right to take away the few opportunities students have to use the other side of their brain?

Taking away the fine arts in a curriculum is taking away what some students use as an escape from reality. When I act in a play, I am no longer shy Allie who works hard in school; I am the character. This is very important to a lot of people. Students need to know that if they are having a hard time with school, there will always be art class where they can turn there emotions into something magnificent. In music class, venting one's frustration through an instrument is a lot better than having a complete meltdown due to stress overload!
