The class he starts is filled with more juvenile delinquents from different backgrounds. Their writings are placed throughout the book as he tells the story of each class and each class member. The reader meets the young men and gets to know and care for them. You will be amazed at the compassion you feel for them, who even as children committed horrible crimes.

The stories the boys write give insight into their lives. We follow them through fights and writer's block. And watch as some get sent to jail for 25 years and others get out and enter the world again. We meet the people who volunteer at the juvenile detention center and those who work there. The characters are well laid out, as is the whole story.
