A small guide to birthmarks

Many people have some sort of birthmark. For some, they are hardly noticable, tucked away in a secret place for few to know about. For others, their birthmark is on display to the world and they have to develop a way to cope with this. Birthmarks differ as well. Here's a brief guide to birthmarks.

Birthmarks are marks on the skin that are there when you are born or develop soon after birth.

Amazingly, there is little known about what causes birthmarks despite being such a common occurrence. According to some folklore, birthmarks are caused by the mother failing to fulfil a wish or a craving during pregnancy. Appropriately, birthmarks are called voglie in Italian and wiham in Arabic, which both roughly translate to "wishes".

There are many different types of birthmarks. Some are caused by a high concentration of blood vessels in the skin. Port wine stains and strawberry birthmarks are amongst this type. Other birthmarks are caused by high pigmentation in that particular area of the skin.

i have one on my thigh..but it's white..is that considered a
birhtmark?

lol. remember when i was younger..i used to keep scrubbing that
spot hoping it would come off. =)

i also have a large one on the back of my other thigh...it's
brown..and i only discovered it 4 years ago..haha
I have a birthmark that takes up my whole back (YIKES!) and it's
bright red, I can't have it removed because there are blood
vessels that run through it which also makes it very hot. I can't
stand it, but I guess there is nothing I can do about it. To cover
it up it would probabley take a whole jar over coverup and I still
wouldn't be able to where a bikini top.
I have a "marilyn monroe" on my upper lip-whoever said it adds
character took my words! I also have a brown mark on my lower
cheeck. However, it's raised so I'll probably get it cut off next
time I go to the dermotologist, just to make sure it's not
cancerous.

On my right leg, I have a pawprint. You can only see it if I'm
wearing a bathing suit or really short shorts, but it's a cute
little brown pawprint.
I have two birthmarks. One is one my right cheek, a little higher
than what someone mentioned as "like marilyn monroe". i think it
adds a little charachter to my face, and ive had it fo ever. A
have another one on the middle of my back, its irrgeular shaped
and bigger then my thumb nail, dont mind it either. But obviously
the two are different. On my back, its just pigmentation.. on my
face it very slighty rounds outward,,,, so which one is which
type, how do u know?

i have a birth mark in my stomach, right side, but more upper
^^
lol that was fun =p
I have a birth mark like Marilyn Monroe. I also have one on my leg
and under my arm that I never showed when I was little now I don't
care. I still don't like the one in my hair, it's right on the
hair line so you see it when my hair is put up. It is realy big so
people ask me what it is when I wear my hair up.. Great article.

I have a strawberry birthmark on my right shoulder, which i like
by the way but its going a way so i'm a little bumd....whats funny
is that my little baby cousin has one too but its not on her
arm...its on her vagina...
I have many birthmarks on my body, the most noticeable one on my
neck. It's about the size of my thumbnail and it's visible when I
wear my hair up (which is often). The other visible one is the
one on my shoulder.

Great article, but I think pictures would have helped
considerably! A little more research into other kinds of
birthmarks would have been nice also.
I have a big brown oval birthmark on my leg. I don't really care
about it, except it bothers me when I'm wearing shorts or skirts
and people are like "oh my god, what is that on your leg?" lol.

I have a cafe' au lait butterfly shaped birth mark on the back of
my head.
My birthmark is a pretty good sized mole on my lower back
I only got 1 birth mark, and its an upside down heart on my leg:)
Could have used some photos, but on the whole, an interesting
article about something that people don't usually think about.

My mom has a port wine stain on the back of her neck. I thought it
was about the size of my thumbnail, but I looked properly the
other day and it's actually about the size of my palm - you just
can't see most of it without looking hard 'cause it's under her
hair.

I can't believe I've lived with her for 22 years and I didn't know
that, LOL.
