So many systems, so little time (and money): 2006 shaped up to be one of the most competitive years in gaming history, bringing back fond memories on the SNES vs. Genesis heyday, where the only true winner was the consumer. New systems flourished on launch (Wii) while others flubbed a bit (PS3); old systems showed some new tricks (Final Fantasy XII for PS2) while others are coming into full bloom nicely (Xbox 360's strong lineup). Even the major handhelds (Nintendo DS, PSP and Gameboy Advance) were bouting, offering up dozens of quality titles between them.
Once the dust settled and the year came to a close, only one fact was certain: In the gaming world, the customer always wins. The following games defined their respective systems in 2006, from next-gen sports to motion-sensitive swordplay and beyond.
