Lily AllenAlright, Still...

Her U.K. heritage, her MySpace account; her neo-abstract album cover, her cutesy album title (Alright, Still...); her sassy, anti-pop demeanor--everything about Lily Allen screams "critic's darling," even before her actual music is mentioned.
Before you get all hot and bothered about the prospect of a brash, pouty popstar from across the sea, be careful: Remember Miss Dynamite, U.K.'s hip-pop prize possession back in 2002? Or flash-in-the-pan 2-step maestro Craig David? Both of these artists were smothered by their own press kits and universal accolades before releasing a proper album in the U.S. By the time they reached our shores it was all but too late--the hype swallowed them whole. Their albums were fresh and inventive in certain ways yet curiously lacking in "something"--that extra "something" you expect after all of the deafening hype.
Allen is different from related artists in the U.K. pop bouillabaisse if only for the sunny disposition she displays throughout her stories of makeups, breakups and wake-ups. Alright, Still... is a vibrant pop record, utilizing hip-hop and the finer details of World Music as an artistic foil (see: M.I.A. and The Streets, the most accomplished of the internet sensations).
