Barack Obama

Presidential Candidate

Written by: Kate T., Associate Editor – Posted: Mon Feb 12th, 2007

When Barack Obama announced that he was forming an exploratory committee to investigate running for the presidency, political experts in Washington predicted that race would be an issue in the upcoming elections. They predicted finger-pointing, some mud-slinging, and that people would vote against racial lines. What they didn't predict, though, was the naïve, racial remarks Senator Joe Biden would make when he threw his hat into the presidential race.

"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," Biden said. "I mean, that's a storybook, man."

Biden's comments sent ripples through both the black and white communities. First articulate, bright and clean African American? He's got to be kidding. What about Martin Luther King Jr.? Jesse Jackson? Shirley Chisholm?

In response to the comments, Obama released a statement saying that that Biden's comments were obviously "historically inaccurate". He told CNN that he didn't pay attention to what people were saying during the campaign season.

As I learn more about Obama, I like him more. It's early, but I'd
really like to hear more about his platform.

Great article, Kate.
"I'm not a democrat, so this whole article was pointless. Where's
the Rudy Giuliani bio coming up?"

It doesn't matter what party you belong to. This article was about
Obama, not about the democratic party.

It wasn't pointless.

The title clearly stated who it was about.
"A lot of people here have said that they don't know much about
Obama. To find out more and him and other candidates, google "vote
smart" there are some websites that give straightforward
information about all the presidential candidates (different
groups who support them, how they voted for everything in
senate/house/etc...just lots of stuff)"

One day people will learn that anyone can make an amazing speech
or have people talk about how great they are.

This is politics. It's all beautiful garbage until everything
comes out in the open.
I'm not a democrat, so this whole article was pointless. Where's
the Rudy Giuliani bio coming up? He's also a presidential hopeful.
Obama seems like such a smart man. He is very articulate and well
spoken. I would hate to have to go against him in a debate.

A lot of people here have said that they don't know much about
Obama. To find out more and him and other candidates, google
"vote smart" there are some websites that give straightforward
information about all the presidential candidates (different
groups who support them, how they voted for everything in
senate/house/etc...just lots of stuff)

To learn more specifically about Obama, just google his name and
go to his presidential site. There basic info there about where
he stands and what he considers to be big issues. (I was
extremely happy to find out that he included ending the genocide
in Darfur as in foreign policy stuff.)

Also, read some of his speeches to get a better idea about his
views. His speech on religion in politics from June 2006(?) was
amazing. It supports basically every view and opinion I can
imagine.

He seems like a really good candidate. Just read up on him. He
seems like an amazing guy who has lived an amazing life.
I think he is a great potential candidate - a charismatic
personality with the ability to lead...this country could use that
You're joking right?

"long as hiliary doesn;t get into presidency (because we know she
just wants to get back at Bill for humiliating her when he was in
office)"

--- Do you know her personally? Did she whisper you a secret
telling you she wants to get back at that mean old husband of
hers?

If she wanted to 'get back' at him there's plenty of things she
could do, leaving him would be one of them, and the press would
not have criticized her for it.

"not because he is black but because he's lived in the "slums".
he's real. he's genuine. he knows what it's like not to have
someone serve him everything in life on a silver platter."

Then it's best you don't get into politics, because that isn't a
reason to make someone president.

Just because he hasn't been handed everything, doesn't mean that
he's going to be a good president, or that he knows what he's
doing.

You can't define character by social status.
i would vote for him (if i was registered but i just don't get
into politics) not because he is black but because he's lived in
the "slums". he's real. he's genuine. he knows what it's like not
to have someone serve him everything in life on a silver platter.
he's opposite of every president since the 1st george bush (who
was just an ass and raised his son to be just like him)....and as
long as hiliary doesn;t get into presidency (because we know she
just wants to get back at Bill for humiliating her when he was in
office), how much harm could it do for obama to run our country?
Everywhere I turn, different races (black, Native American, Asian,
etc.) are proclaiming that they aren't being treated the same as
the whites. I think that just because Barack is black should not
be a reason to make him president. The USA should be one united
people, not a country filled with different racial groups. The
USA shouldn't care what race or gender their political leaders
are, only what they believe. I would think that Americans would be
above seperating blacks and whites, but seeing as Black History
Month still exists, apparently we're not. (if there is a Black
History Month, why no Asian history or Mexican history? Doesn't a
month dedicated to one race seperate the people of the USA? Why
not just have an American History Month? Much more unifying, I
think.) I don't know enough about Obama to judge whether I like
him or not, but I'm not going to favor him just because he's
black.
I absolutely adore this man. He came to my university a few weeks
back (student rally, "Yes We Can!") and delivered an amazing
speach. He will be getting my vote on the democrastic primary.
Thanks.

:) I have other ideas/plans/thoughts on the subject, but this
isn't an article for that, haha.

Very, VERY well said.
I completely agree with you.
Obama is what our country needs. If he makes it through the
primaries, I will definitely be voting for him. (I'm registered as
an Independent, so I cannot vote in the primaries...)

Good luck Obama!
"Honestly I'm really tired of race being an issue or a comment in
this day and age. You would think that by now America as a whole
would be above that. Clearly not. There are many Americans (both
whites and blacks included) that continue to make racial
statements and honestly it's really starting to get to me."

You have to understand that America has thrived on one-upping
eachother.

Affirmative Action is the most ridiculous thing ever.

If America would get rid of it's need to separate people for
individual praise or disappointment this would be behind us.

There is no need for a black history month, just as there is no
need for a white history month.

Every month is about history, every month should be remembering
those who came before us and did amazing things.

There shouldn't be "white only" scholarships, "black only"
scholarships, "hispanic only" scholarships.

These things only fuel the need to seperate ourselves from being a
whole.

America will never be united as one until we stop catering to
everyone who feels they deserve a shining star moment because of
what happened years ago.

In regards to Obama - Personally, I don't know enough about him
and his ideas.

It's easy to say what we want to do and what we plan to do, but
it's common for politicians to get amnesia the second they swear
into office.

I'm NOT voting for Hilary, that's for sure and I won't be voting
for Obama JUST because he's "cute" or "articulate" or
"intelligent" or because he's NOT white. (*sarcasm* Fight the man!
*/sarcasm*)
Great. Now we are voting for people as president because they are
cute. That's freaking lovely.
they said he was what 45??? he looks sooo much younger... wow...
he is cute
the next presidential election will be first time voting because I
will finally be 18...
I cant wait to vote for him
I think Obama would make a great president. I seriously can sit
and listen to him and not get bored, which doesn't happen often.
I sat one night and watched him on tv until it was over, and thats
something amazing.. I can't listen to bush for a minute without
getting annoyed/bored.

Not only is Obama interesting, hes good looking too. I know that
doesn't matter though
not going to happen in a million years !
Like I said I am a Republican but I agree with you that Obama is
gonna shine like a star regardless of whether or not he gets
nominated.

I mean seriously he's got more charisma than Hillary does.
i love this man. i really do. too bad he's married!! ohhh
anywho, i still look past his sexiness and his race and i still
think he's great. he's energetic and smart and gives the younger
generation of voters someone to relate to. people may be unsure
about him now but i think come election season he's going to shine
like a star!

ps- joe biden is an incredible a-hole, and hillary clinton is
sorta crazy.
Yeah when I vote myself I don't worry about the skin color, I
worry about where one stands on the issues.

I have voted for a couple of Blacks before but only because the
ones I voted for I happened to actually agree with on the issues.

However if I do agree with a White person more than a Black person
on issues then yes im definetly voting for the White person.

I am a Republican and while Martin Luther King Jr appears to
probably have been a Democrat, I will say he had a lot of good
points.

One of his good points was that his dream was when a Man would be
judged not by skin but by character.

In regard to Obama, while I prefer a Republican for President, I
don't deem Obama to be too bad.

Ok yeah I wanted Alan Keyes to win the Illinois Senate Election,
heck I even think Keyes would make a good President as well.

However I will say if I had to pick between Hillary and Obama, I
would pick Obama for President for sure because he does have
better character than Hillary that is for sure.

However my fav Democrat out of who is running is Bill Richardson.

my 2 Favorite Republicans right now on the list are

#1 Tom Tancredo and #2 Mitt Romney

I don't care for McCain but I would vote for him over all
Democrats except Bill Richardson.

Bill Richardson I would pick over John McCain.
I'm with xoflirtxo on this one.
I'm voting for him 100%. I registered Democrat but I'm more in the
middle when it comes to political issues. (I mostly did it to piss
off my gun-toting redneck Republican family =]) I hadn't actually
read a simple statement of what he plans to accomplish if he
becomes president...but yeah, now that I have, I definitely like
where he's coming from. It'll be my first election since I became
an adult squeeee.
Honestly I'm really tired of race being an issue or a comment in
this day and age. You would think that by now America as a whole
would be above that. Clearly not. There are many Americans (both
whites and blacks included) that continue to make racial
statements and honestly it's really starting to get to me.

I don't go into the voting booth thinking.. oh this guy is white
so I'm going to vote for him.

I think we need to stick to the issues and vote based on beliefs
and who we think will benefit this country the most.. rather than
race.

It saddens me that people actually DO go in there thinking oh it's
a woman or oh he's black so we are going to vote for them and
completely avoid the issues.

I'm not saying I either like or dislike him. I'm just saying let's
put aside race and get to the bottom of what these candidates are
about!
This article didn't have enough info for me to really have an
opinion. I'm a Republican, but I'm willing to listen to both
sides, and I would vote Democratic. I'm big on moral issues, and
this article didn't touch on that at all.
I'm turning 18 just before the elections so I'll get to vote. :)
I'm so excited for that. I'm a huge Obama fan.
Barack Obama is awesome! I would definitely vote for him only...
I was born 2 months too late ;(

I probably won't be voting.
But, if I were to it'd be for Obama.
I am so happy that I will be 18 by the election date for 2008 to
vote for Obama! His plans for the urban and inner city areas are
main concerns for and I support them 100%. He has a great plan for
the country and it is actually a plan that could work. Thanx mom
and dad for having me in 1990!
And I adore Obama. =)
i love barack obama.
i'm going to vote for him.

it took me so long to figure out how to say his name. insane.

i have to say for a democrat, Obama is a pretty cool guy...BUT he
is still a democrat and I am not fond of their ideals most of the
time.
He's alright- but my vote is going for Rudy Guilliani
Oh, and I applaud his going through school without having to use a
legacy to get in *cough*Bush*cough*. He's a hardworking
individual who simply wants to make this a better country.
Color has nothing to do with my support for Obama. I believe he
has the ability, energy, and ambition to make the USA a better
nation. We have our faults, but Obama can change that.

Biden, by the way, is a moron.
im from IL and we LOVE him..he would be a GREAT
president..regardless of his color...he can fix the ruined country
that bush made..im excited to vote for Obama...i think this
country IS ready for a black president..it's just a color..it does
not define the type of person you are
