For those not in the know, buxom brunette Lara Croft is the sole spokesperson for women in gaming. Much to the chagrin of the gaming community--girls and guys alike--the notion that every woman character in gaming can be broken down into pixelated curves and girly stereotypes (read: the girls of the Dead or Alive series) is one that's completely unwarranted. The list below represents just a few of gaming's heroines, from the lovers to the fighters and back again.
Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark)
Tough-as-nails female Joanna Dark got her storied start as a maverick bounty hunter in 2000 with her Nintendo 64 debut, Perfect Dark. Her name stemming from France's original riot-grrrl, Joan of Arc, Dark infiltrates lab facilities, cracks high-security codes and executes her enemies all while in stealth mode.
Although it wouldn't be another five years until she would return to the gaming fray (2005's Perfect Dark Zero for the Xbox 360), Ms. Dark's intimidating presence is one that would make Metal Gear's Solid Snake quake in his military boots.
