The term "Fashion Icon" is thrown around haphazardly these days. I've even heard it used in reference to the Swarovski-crystal-clad, fuzzy pink sweat suit loving Paris Hilton. Of course, being famous and owning chichi clothing and tiny illegal pets does not necessarily qualify you for icon status. Even being chased by paparazzi, emulated by the masses and having designers throw free couture at you does not guarantee you the title.
(sorry MK & A)

I don't have to tell you that female fashion has come a long way. As trivial as it may seem in the ongoing battle for women's liberation, clothing is actually an important part of women's history. Fashion is at once completely superficial and entirely necessary. It is an art form that we partake in every day. Let us treat it as such, and pay homage to the brilliant women that have paved the way for the liberated trends that we are able to enjoy today.
