There are two distinct camps when it comes to American Idol watchers: One watches AI for the zaniness of it all, vicariously living through the judges in hopes that somebody with a smidgen of originality will win the title; the other will hitch a ride on their personal star whether they are victorious or not.
I never understood the fascination of Elliott Yamin, Idol's third place winner (read: not Taylor Hicks or Katharine McPhee). Vocally, he was pretty astounding, but his style and presence were a bit lackluster compared to diva-in-training McPhee and Hicks' boozy exuberance. Now that the dust has settled Hicks has become a bit of a caricature, leaving McPhee primed to follow in the lineage of past AI runner-up fame.
