Ultimate Frisbee is not just a sport for hippies.
UC Santa Cruz student George Van Pelt learned this the hard way when he went to try out for his college team. "I came out the first day in bare feet," Van Pelt said. "I thought it would be a bunch of hippies, but then everyone had their cleats on."
Ultimate is not like your typical BBQ or beach Frisbee game--it's an organized sport similar to football or rugby, just minus the tackling. A team of seven throws the disc to the opposing team to start the game, while points are scored when the Frisbee is advanced into the end zone.
Van Pelt figured the rules out quickly. "I ran back to my room to grab my cleats, and the rest is history," he said.
