Hidden Sugar and Calories

How To Avoid Them

As the weather gets warmer, and bathing suits, outdoor activities and sports time comes closer, everyone wants to start getting in shape and ready for the summer. One step to this is to watch what you eat, obviously avoiding excess amounts of deep fried foods and lots of fat. Many people turn to foods that claim to be 'fat free, low fat', etc, but there are plenty of foods out there that may seem healthy, but are actually hiding lots of sugars and calories.

In order to avoid these tricky foods, you first must recognize different terms for sugar. Since all foods must list the ingredients, this is the place to start. Obviously if one of the main ingredients is sugar, it might not be the best choice. If you're looking for a sweet treat but don't want to consume the added sugars that are in a lot of products, keep this list handy and carefully read the label on foods you are not sure of.

Different terms for added sugar:

-Corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup
-Dextrin
-Corn sweeteners
-Malt
-Molasses
-Turbinado sugars.

Once you can recognize these added sugars, you will have an easier time avoiding them.

I agree with DarkJade. If something's on the label, it's not that
tough to figure out how much sugar/calories are in it. It's the
food that you get without nutrition information that's difficult
to deal with. And while fruit is good, it still has a good deal of
sugar so you probably don't want to eat too much.
not just 'fat free', but many don't actually read the serving
sizes as the article points out.
DarkJade88, you would be surprised how many people down calorie
laden food thinking they're doing their body a favor because the
label says "Fat Free".
This article wasn't very helpful. It only rehashed common
knowledge.
