Does the thought of a long, frilly dress give you the shivers? Do you want to look memorable for prom without adorning yourself in layers of tulle and lace? There are thousands prom dress options, from long and shimmery to short and flirty. It's easiest to have fun when you feel comfortable and look your best, so if you are looking for a casual dress that can be worn to other events, here are some ideas.

The first step to choosing the perfect dress for your prom is to find out what styles work best on what body type. Although there are four main body types, almost no one has exactly the same shape. Remember, your body will be one of these types, but may differentiate some from the description. So read on to find the best casual prom dress for you!

"1) Girls with straight body types typically can’t do strapless
because they don’t have much to hold it up (think when you’re on
the dance floor with your arms around your date’s neck and your
dress is sneaking down your chest--could be disastrous).
A better option would be a straight across neckline (like
strapless) but with spaghetti straps."

in fact, when I was in a musical my senior year in high school, we
had to get straps sewn onto my dress, because I wouldn't have been
able to hold it up dancing otherwise. (34AA boobs and strapless
dresses don't mix.)

"Because skirt part of the dress flares out, it would actually
accentuate your large hips and backside. This would be a better
dress for an apple shaped body (larger on top with slimmer
hips)."

Yes, the halter does give the shoulders more emphasis, but when it
comes to being pear, a flare skirt is like a flashing neon sign
that says "BUTT LOOK HERE"--take it from my friend.
this is ugly
but it doesn't seem to make the hips look smaller--just check out
anyone who's tried that approach
nes721 you have some good points but what there saying about the
pear shape if the bottem of the shirt or dress is larger then hips
it will seem to make the hips look smaller
Just a few corrections:

1) Girls with straight body types typically can’t do strapless
because they don’t have much to hold it up (think when you’re on
the dance floor with your arms around your date’s neck and your
dress is sneaking down your chest--could be disastrous).
A better option would be a straight across neckline (like
strapless) but with spaghetti straps.

2) The dress shown for the pear shaped body would actually do the
opposite of what she says it will do. Because skirt part of the
dress flares out, it would actually accentuate your large hips and
backside. This would be a better dress for an apple shaped body
(larger on top with slimmer hips).
A better option would be a dress that enhances the bust by using a
horizontal neckline and/or horizontal lines or ruffles (but only
on the bust) and downplays the rest of your body with a solid
color and is more form-fitting. This will actually balance out
your body by making your bust and hips look more the same size,
rather than hiding your hips with an even bigger piece of
material. With apple and pear shaped girls, the goal should be to
balance out the body rather than hiding the more voluptuous
areas.

3) The definition of an hourglass shape is not that “your bust can
be any size” but that your bust and your hips are the same size
(or close). That is what differentiates an hourglass from an
apple or pear shape. Almost any style of dress looks good on this
body shape, although strapless dresses are especially becoming.

4) One thing the author forgot to mention about the plus sizes, is
that solid colors and matte fabrics (such as velvet) usually look
best, and it’s always ideal to enhance the more flattering parts
of the body such as legs or bust. V-necks and halter-tops are
usually prime for plus-size girls.

The article was well-written and had some great suggestions. I
just thought that a few more things needed to be noted.

well, considering that it's an article on body shapes...

that's pretty much the only time magazines feature plus-sized
models.
