Big Yellow Limos

Keeping prom night safe

This year, school districts across the US are shaking up a prom tradition- they're replacing the usual line of limos with big, yellow buses. As prom accidents become more common, school districts are hoping to keep their students safe, even if it means taking away some of the night's magic.

Districts are citing concerns over the use of drugs or alcohol during the night, and say that the buses are a way to keep everyone safe. Some NJ schools are offering them for a more practical reason: State law mandates that those under the age of 18 can only have one other underage passenger, and can't drive after midnight. For them, offering buses help the students obey the laws.

Regardless of the reasoning behind it, students are less than thrilled.

Alli McDonald, a student in Lexington, Mass., recently told the Boston Globe, "Who takes a bus to prom? You're supposed to have a limo." Lexington has outlawed limos for the prom, offering students coach buses and chartered trolleys instead.

Im sorry but Ive never heard something so stupid in my life. The
students dont drive the limos, the driver does. secondly, if youre
going to a prom is a bus that doesnt have seat belts then it
certainly isnt safe!
OMG I wish I had thought of this taking a bus would be so funny
but I don't think making it mandatory is going to solve anything.
As an option I think it would be ok. However, those who party are
still going to figure out how to do so after the prom so I really
don't see the bus fixes the problem. This would also be
impractical at small schools.
I think it's a good idea to have something other than cars and
limos, for those who can't afford the limos. But I don't think the
limos should be banned (after all, getting in a limo is no more
dangerous than getting on a school bus), and I think students
should be offered the opportunity to pay for or raise money for a
better form of transportation. At least chartered buses, which are
much cleaner and more comfortable.
why does the limo have anything to do with accident since students
aren't even driving it? and using schoolbus for prom?
apparently, there are accidents and students died from school bus
as well.....
i agree w/her. its not like the students are driving the limo. It
makes it just as safe as the bus., & im sure if the limo caused an
accident that the limo company would be liable for the accident,
causing drivers to be very careful. As with buses, they are so
huge that some drivers will drive crazt just because they dont
think they will get hurt if the buss crashes. ive rode greyhound
enough times to know that. Besides, some people drive themselfes
to prom and drink, so having a limo is way better than driving
themselves. So, i dont see why the school would fource students to
go on a buss.
i would never ever step onto a yellow bus in my heels/prom
dress...absolutely not..and i dont understand why you can't take a
limo..yes i understand why they don't want the students to drive
there (my school doesnt let seniors drive to prom fine) but
student aren't the ones driving the limo anyway
i took a limo to my prom -- and I've only been in a limo once
since then -- I loved it and still feel that the ride over the
Lombardo's was the best thing about my prom :)
mabie they should have coaches, that might be alittle cooler
Typo fixed; thanks for pointing it out!

Typo in the article. Swansea is not in Rhode Island. It is in
Massachusettes. Swansea borderlines Rhode Island to a point and
like a lot of people go to Swansea Mall and the Swansea area
stores who do live in RI. I grew up in RI so I know for 150% fact.
that's just ridiculous!! way to ruin people's proms guys!!! A
school bus is just as likely (if not more so) to get hit as a limo
is. And if kids are drinking, which some do at their proms, why
is a limo any different from a bus??? The kids aren't driving the
limos!!! And it's classier than a bus...it's just an awesome
memory to add to your prom!!!

School buses!?!? NO WAY!!
It just isn't as exciting rolling up to the prom spot in a big
yellow bus than a sleek black limo. It's not as if the driver is
drunk, or one of the prom go-ers is driving. It's about choosing a
safe driver, people!Plus, you'll be seated with friends rather
than people you don't know. And sometimes, it's not that
expensive.
Last year for prom (Junior prom because we don't have a senior
prom.) No one took a limo, we all took cars, although the idea of
having buses is a very good one. It's not practical when it comes
to keeping drunken kids off the streets. People are still going to
want to drink, and they are more likely to drive themselves over
taking buses... because frankly... taking a bus to a drinking
party. Not the brightest idea.
i like the idea of a charted trolley. maybe instead of a bus, the
school couuld let the kids go to prom on a charted trolley. the
cost of the trolley could be added to the price of the bids, or
the seniors could fundraise for it.
my schools takes a school bus to wherever the prom is taking
place... But for gand march you should be able to show up at your
school in anything!
the bus could get hit by a semi, or roll.. or something..

I'd rather take a limo.
As much as people object, I think that's a really good and safe
idea. Plus I don't think not having a limo to prom is even that
big of a deal.
I'll take a limo over a bus anyways, If i want to pay money for a
limo and have someone eles drive me, its the same as letting
someone (a bus driver) drive me.
