Chivalry: The Feminine Viewpoint

Chivalry from a female perspective

What does the term dating today mean to our generation? Looking at it from a Hollywood perspective, dating is just the prelude to sex. One of the main characters will make the overture to the other inevitably leading to a dark scene with soft music. Predictably, they fall in love afterwards and the credits roll. If we were to look to young teenagers, then we would see that dating has been replaced by the more innocuous term, "hanging out". Teenagers whip out their cells to call of even more impersonally, text a boy or girl they like to invite them to "hang out" at their house, someone else's, or at a local hangout. If all goes well, this pairing will become a bona fide couple, holding hands practicing varsity tonsil hockey in the hallways. I can't help but to be cynical of today's dating world. Years of hearing about, reading about, and watching on TV about men and women that prowl the bars and clubs for a potential dates leads me to wonder, are they in it for me or they in it for the dark scene and soft music.

The way I see it... it's just respect. Why not open a door for a
woman instead of slamming it in her face? But it shouldn't be just
a man doing it for a woman.. it should be common courtesy and we
all should do these things for each other.. (not so much the
pulling out of the chairs, but you get the idea)
Hm. I'm kind of torn here.
Why is a simple act of respect and courtesy such a loaded thing? I
guess my main problem is that I really don't care for the gender
roles active here. Why should we girls not act similarily to
important guys in our lives? Being treated in such a way does feel
nice, I just consiter it a basic respect.

Anyone see where I'm coming from?

I see your point, and no, you did not offend while making it. I
realize that one of the most important things for women is that we
have achieved liberation on many levels. This article was not to
advertise that our generation should go back, but more of take
what rules of the past and apply it to the future (I do not mean
that women should be cover head to toe, etc. No way!) As a
Christian, my views are different than some, but I agree with you,
women should be able to celebrate being a woman any way they want.
Whether that is being a slut, like you said, or finding other ways
to do so. Some girls like chivalry, some don't, but either way it
is a intersting article topic, and one that can be argued from
both sides. Either way, thank you for reading and commenting!

I like the point this article is making, but personally, I find
the chivalry idea very patronising. I dont want to offend the
author, as Im sure it was meant in good intentions, but it seems
like ur wanting to go back to a time where sexual liberation
doesnt exist. Is it so wrong for a women to celebrate who gender
in any way they want, without having other women judging them. Im
all for being respected, but I dont think its any of my business
what others choose to do. Equal rights should mean equal rights.
If I wanna be a slut, like a man, I should be able to! (Feminism
is not a naughty word!) Enough ranting now lol xxx
