Dating in the 1950's

A defining time for daters everywhere

Some want to blame Elvis for the teenage rebellion that took place in the later 1950's. It was only after he came around that teens began to revolt against the traditional ways of dressing, talking, and dating. Typically, when you think about the 1950's and what you have seen in the movies (example: Pleasantville), you usually envision malt shops and bobbysoxers. Or maybe the old T.V. show Leave It to Beaver pops into your mind, bringing with it the thought of owning a T.V. that is solely in black and white and shows only a grand total of three channels. However, regardless of what you think of when you envision the 1950's, you may not realize that those teens from the 1950's actually set dating standards for future years to come.

Dating in America alone has been deemed extremely unique when compared to the way other countries practice the "art" of dating. Few countries participate in this like Americans do. Then again, few countries have the same social exceptions and conditions as America. Before the mid-20's, a man would call upon a woman by showing up at her house and giving his card to the maid who passed it on to the young lady. From there the lady is able to choose if she wants to let him in or not. If she chose to let him into the home, she would usually receive him in the parlor and offer refreshments.

Wow yeah not too much different but still different
dating doesn't sound that much different than today. just a little
less extreme.
it's still popular to be dating. it's still thought of to let the
guy do the asking (yes, it's true. silly, but true.) and it's
still ok to express lots of physical attraction.
i have the feeling that a lot of young men came back from WWII and
went, "well, crap, there's no time to worry about giving someone a
stupid card. i could've been dead." that's why there was a baby
boom in that era--young men and women didn't wanna take anything
as slow as it had been before.
