Tim McGraw is a cherry picker. He's an artist who knows that, sometimes, it's more important to pick a hit song rather than attempt to write one. Reason Number Two McGraw is overall the most popular and respected man in country music: His versatility. Whether it's a duet with his wife Faith Hill ("It's Your Love") or rapper Nelly ("Over and Over"), McGraw sounds calm and collected, using his trademark drawl to the advantage of the song, and not for ego-tripping motives. Recent years have seen McGraw slowly transforming into a more world-weary man, and Let It Go sheds a bit more of the man's sappy skin in favor of blunt, upfront-and-center songs.
The proclamation of McGraw churning out a thinking man's album may seem like a bit of a shock after hearing Let It Go's opener, "Last Dollar (Fly Away)," a cheerful song of freedom with a sing-songy chorus and even a children's chorus at the tail-end. But the album takes a hairpin turn with "I'm Workin'," where McGraw sings "Damn I hope no one dies on this night shift tonight," which is light-years away from the "1-2-3 Like a bird I sing / Cause you've given me the most beautiful set of wings" chorus of "Last Dollar." Side by side these songs are a jarring-yet-perfect realization of where McGraw is at these days; he's a commercial artist with a blue-collar heart.
