The Dirt on Organic

Why It's Better For You AND the World

Organic (or·gan·ic) [awr-gan-ik] - adj: refers to all "naturally produced" foods.

Since the beginning of human existence, naturally grown - or organic foods - have been used and eaten by people around the world for generations. So why have "organic foods" suddenly become so popular in homes throughout the U.S. today?

Though "organic" may have become a common household name in many America homes since the 1990's, some are still skeptical of these foods. Foods that are grown "organically" are grown in crops that are simply un fooled-around with - meaning that they are guaranteed (if USDA certified):

* grown without harmful pesticides or preservatives
* have not been genetically modified / engineered
* are allowed to germinate / grow naturally and at their own pace.

Sounds good right? So why are people still skeptical? Here are some of the MYTHS that you may (or may not) have heard about organic products.

I always buy organic. Not because I can taste a difference but
because it seems like the right thing to do. I'm against using
toxins in general - I always try to buy earth-friendly products.
Toxins are scary, ending up in our drinking water, mutating frogs,
killing fish... I don't know why someone would continue to
contribute to that.
and the socks are cute... google organic or sweatshop-free... it's
out there <3
free range/organic meat means and eggs and milk mean they've been
treated so much better
it could have been better if you had some proof and more details
about what's good about them but it was still nice. I'm personally
pro-organic now that I've done some research but as for clothes(or
food) I think it's more important for it to be sweatshop free.
Sweatshops are a crime against humanity today, organic is more of
an issue of the future, which may never come... but then again the
genocide in darfur is even more urgent.
To tell you the truth, I don't understand why people would get
anything with pesticides to begin with. I mean think about it, if
it kills a bug could that possibly be good for your body? I
personally don't think so. Organic foods are a good idea, and even
if they are a little more expensive it's worth it, because it's
better for your body. I definitely agree with this article.
gemmaew, you probably won't taste a difference. Unless you go on
a strict diet and cut out anything that may contain pesticides,
herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, and so on, and go for
extensive bloodwork before and after, you probably won't know
anything for sure.

Obviously it's better to consume less poison.

I think it's funny that so many people are opposed to things that
are better for us. Everyone assumes that it's some kind of
conspiracy or fraud that's only going to benefit politicians.
Maybe these guys that promote organic farming and eating do have
their own agendas, but it's all for your own good.

If you are serious about eating organic foods, be sure to check
out your state/province's regulations on organic farming. Make
sure that anything certified organic is what you think it is.
This isn't a universal system yet, so it's quite possible that
you're not eating what you think you're eating. For example, I
believe that in Ontario animals grown for human consumption can
receive vaccinations and their meat will still be considered
organic.
I dont quite believe all the hype when it comes to organic food.
Ive tried both and find no difference. I think I will continue to
eat non-organic until I find comprehensive research that shows me
just how great it is. You telling its great doesnt mean it is hehe
xx
I peronsally love organic fruits and veggies. I can't eat an non
organic green pepper, or even carrots. I can taste the difference
and don't like it. Good article :)
