When cassette tapes were still king, I spent my days trying to perfect the art of the mix tape. I would spend hours listening to the radio and my older brothers' tapes trying to pick out the right songs to put in the right sequence. I wanted to make the perfect statement of what I was feeling at the time. Mix tapes became extinct when CDs took over the media market. But let's not forget the art to making the perfect compilation. Here are some suggestions on how to start your own mix to take you back to your roots.
1. The Workout Mix
A workout mix requires high-octane, energy-boosting music. From hip-hop to hardcore, there are different songs that can put in you the right mood when you need to burn off those extra calories. I prefer happy, upbeat songs that make me forget how much I hate being in the gym.
Old school suggestion: 311 (self titled)
When 311 released their self-titled album in 1995, they were something surprising and fresh. "Down" fits the bill for energizing music, and "Don't Stay Home" almost commands that you get moving. Their reggae and hip-hop influences can kick start you into a great workout.
