Politics as usual with this Missouri-based quartet.
This New York-based quartet is prepared to rock in '09.
The hard rock quintet gets sinister on "Cinco Diablo."
Sticking to what they do best on their fifth album.

Green Day

An American Rock Band

When you think of American rock bands, who comes to mind? The Beatles? Uh, probably not. The Byrds? Maybe. What about The Beach Boys? Do you think of them? Perhaps. But when I think of American rock, I think of Green Day.

Green Day first started in 1987 with Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt, who were childhood friends. They were 14 at the time, and they called themselves Sweet Children. In 1989 they added a third member, Al Sobrante. They then changed their name to Green Day in honor of their love of marijuana. Soon they were discovered by the owner of Lookout! Records, Larry Livermore.

In early 1990 the band released an EP, 1,000 Hours and an LP, 39/Smooth. Later that year they recorded two more EPs, Slappy and Sweet Children. Sweet Children included songs which were recorded with Skene! Records. They did a national tour that same year, but afterwards, Sobrante went to college in the East Bay Area . Tre' Cool, who was Lookout's drummer, joined the band. Cool was only supposed to be a temporary replacement, but then it became obvious that Sobrante was not serious about being in a band full-time. Cool then joined the band permanently.

Green Day is great, even now. Every one else likes all pink and
girly, which is ok, but people need to try new things. Thanks for
this wonderful article.

better thank agen!
I agree with some wen i say that they are trying to hard in some
ways. They were beter back then.
i like green day but not as much as my friends.
They've been around since I was a kid, wow! Great article.
I love their music from the 90s. IT's not that bad nowadays, but I
think they're trying too hard to please the GC fans and
whatnot...
