Living in Manhattan for the past few years has taught me a lot: Don't travel alone at night, don't eat near Times Square, don't ride the "Q" train, business men at happy hour are not your friends, people from Long Island are only using you for your apartment, deli sushi is not the best idea, the park at night sure is different, cars generally don't want to hit you but its nice to play it safe... the list goes on. The most important thing I've mastered, however, is dressing appropriately for an urban environment without sacrificing style (most of the time.)
I once read a magazine article written by a Parisian woman about French vs. American fashion. To sum it up briefly, she was not impressed with our laziness when it came to clothing. In the piece, she mentioned that all girls in flat shoes "look like duck," and that even her 80-year-old grandmother still walked around Paris in heels.
Although I was wearing bright green Chucks while reading the article, I couldn't help but agree with this horrible woman-there is no replacement for heels! What better than an elegant extra three or four inches to vastly improve the caliber of your outfit, legs and certain other places as well.
Tragically, Carrie-Bradshawing it everyday, is not an option for most women. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to flounce about the West Village in Manolos and chiffon, but wearing uncomfortable and overly-dressy heels around the city just makes you look as bad as you feel.
So to help you out, my city-savvy friends, I found some celebrities in cool shoes walking around urban environments! That means I found tall but casual, comfortable(ish) and always fabulous spring footwear at affordable prices for you to try no matter where you live.
