A Motherless Mother's Day

In Dedication to My Step Mom

Mother's day is supposed to be a day filled with joy, flowers, cheesy greeting cards, and long distance phone calls. A day when we take an extra moment out of our otherwise self indulgent lives to indulge someone else, and her name is Mom.

At least, this is what I've seen in the movies, read in magazines, and heard about from friends.

You see, I don't have a mom. I lost my mother years ago to an assortment of things and what it comes down to is that she's never been around. And the only real mother figure I had was my step mom who died exactly five years ago today in a traffic accident.

So what happens to the rest of us on Mother's Day? We're all used to hearing stories about kids growing up without father figures, and single moms, but what about those of us who have had to grow up without a mom? Those of us without someone to braid our hair, and talk to us about makeup and boys. Without someone to argue about how that dress is to small and that boy is too old and that 2 a.m. is not a reasonable curfew. I'd kill for someone to fight with like that; for someone, a mom, who loved me enough to take the time to fight with me in the first place.
