The Media

A False Reality

Written by: Ashleigh L., Reporter – Posted: Thu Apr 26th, 2007

Television gives us a sense of "false reality." The entire media buzz leaves us hoping for more than we can ever have. Television shows us women who we in turn idolize. Tiny women such as Nicole Richie, Mary-Kate Olsen, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton fill the airwaves.

Throughout the past century the face of the media has changed dramatically. In the 1950s and early 1960s, curvy, feminine bodies were seen throughout the modeling world. When Twiggy hit the modeling world in 1966 the idea of female perfection changed. Weighing just 91 pounds, Twiggy was a dramatic difference from the "voluptuous ideals of female perfection" that had been seen in earlier models. The modeling market has never been the same.

Twiggy's thin waif-like frame gave women everywhere a different sense of perfection. Voted "The Face of 1966" by Britain's Daily Express, just weeks after her modeling debut, women everywhere began to dramatically change their ideals. Curvy was no longer chic.

using that logic doesnt work. of course people idolize
celebrities.

it is how we are conditioned to think and behave. just realize
where your thoughts come from in order to overpower them.
everyone has them. its nothing to be ashamed of or chide people
for. like i just looked at this pic of nicole and thought "Id
take it" then I had to reexamine my thoughts and realize that I'm
real dumb as a result of outside influence and the thought has
passed.

maybe I will start a bum chic ad campaign though.
This article is true and sad, but honestly, it's the individual
girl's fault for idolizing anyone that is not even comparable to
themselves.
I see a lot of blondes, but I don't want to be blonde. Who the
hell cares if all u see is Nicole and Paris? If all u see are bums
on the street, does that make u wanna be a bum? Girls these days
are quite stupid and it's about time they try to be smarter.
p.s it really was my friend.... not me. :)
this might come out all wrong but...

yes it might be foolish to blame your problems on someone you
don't even know but, look at it this way. i had a friend who has
this problem. she was already in such a mental state that these
celeb's and skinny images everywhere didn't help. when you're
already thinking your worthless or fat, and you get slammed with a
skinny images, it's prob. the last thing you're going to want to
see. or the last thing thats good for you.

i guess you have to look at it from their point of view.

if i was already depressed about being fat, skinny people aren't
what i want to see.
tell us something we already didn't know about the media's desired
body image.
Good article. I think that picture of Nicole Richie makes her look
disgusting. I'm not saying all thin people look disgusting; we
know that Nicole doesn't naturally look like that, so she must
have starved herself to reach that weight. It doesn't look good at
all.

And you're right. There are so many women with 'ideal' bodies who
have large breasts and no hips or anything. Being very skinny with
big boobs is very rare naturally.
Why can't average be beautiful?
This article was very well written....however.

I'm in love with celebrities and gossip and Hollywood....and it
has never once made me doubt my body. If girls know that
celebrities make them feel bad about themselves, the first step
should be to avoid exposing themselves to them.

Its foolish to blame your problems and emotions on someone you
dont even know.
