First Time Motherhood

The ups and the downs

There's nothing like having a child of your own to make you appreciate your own mother. As a first time mother of a beautiful four month old baby boy, I've discovered that there are both ups and downs to becoming a mother. The positives definitely outweigh the negatives, but one thing's for sure--having a child will change your life forever.

Being a mother has many rewards, but it comes with its fair share of hardships too, particularly for a young mother. There is a misconception that young parents cannot possibly provide for their children either emotionally or financially. It seems that people judge parents solely based on their age and without any outside information. After experiencing motherhood, I've come to a different conclusion than most, that so long as a mother is willing to put in the effort, she will be a successful parent. In a poll of 50 Kiwibox members, 54% believe motherhood was harder at a younger age. However, 32% think it was just hard to be a mother period.

Heather, 22, had her first child when she was nineteen years old. She says, "You're labeled as a bad mom because you're young. Some people are ready to become parents when they're younger, whereas some people aren't ready to become parents until they're older. Either way, there's nothing wrong with having a kid young as long as you can take care of the child." Syk, 23, who was 19 when she had her first child, agrees. She adds, "It's not really as much the physical age as it is the maturity. No age group is more capable than another."

This article was a waste of my time. Not only was it poorly
written, but it didn't really give any information on why being a
mom is so great. Learn to write.
I know I'm not a young mom now, but I once was and I love this
article.
I agree with shortnsweet11... beautifully written article. I look
forward to having my first child.. though I don't think that'll be
until I'm in the 24-26 age group.
Good job on this article.
Great article! And this really rang true for me: "people are
always acting like I’m not using enough blankets or dressing him
properly even though each time he is perfectly comfortable and
there’s no way he would be cold."

I have a 9 week old baby boy and he is a very warm baby. And there
are a few people who keep acting like I'm not taking proper care
of him because I don't bundle him in a toque and 3 blankets every
time I take him out!! They're like "oh he's gonna get ear
infections and he's gonna get cold" and I know they're just trying
to help but OMG it bugs me so much! lol they think just because
I'm young (even though I'm 22, so not that young) that I don't
know what I'm doing.
That was a beautifully written article.

And you quoted me--that's even cooler!

I had my son at the age of 20, but I look like I'm 16, so I hear
things all the time.

This moved me almost to tears. Thank you.
I'm a young mom with three beautiful boys. I love this article. I
think young moms deserve a lot of credit. There's a lot of
stereotypes that come with being a young mom but from what I've
seen, most are untrue.
