Philip K. Dick's 1981 novel The Golden Man is about a golden-skinned humanoid of sorts that "fertilizes" countless members of the female gender with his expert seduction skills. Once the golden boy starts to seriously deplete humanity's gene pool the livelihood of the human race is at stake, impending doom lurks, and so on and so forth.
What does this have to do with Next? Absolutely nothing, except that the movie is "loosely based" after Dick's novel. Next director Lee Tamahori spins massive doses of camp and confetti with the book's framework to create this Sci-Fi flick. The outcome is butchery, but it's also quite a trip for the senses.
Next chronicles a story of another type of golden boy--a magician. Chris Johnson (Nicolas Cage) is a B-Level magician-for-hire...but wait, there's more! While most magicians conjure up illusions and sleight-of-hand tricks, Chris can see into the future...two whole minutes into the future! Parlor trick or not, he finds it proper to use his clairvoyant gift to rack in extra coinage and seduce babes like Liz (Jessica Biel), a young teacher who has such an impact on Chris that he becomes able to see whole hours into the future when in her presence...seriously. Life is looking good for Chris Johnson. That is, until the government steps in.
Yes, the government--FBI agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) in particular--has been watching Chris and his time-manipulating tricks for some time, and now they need his assistance to find the whereabouts of a nuclear bomb and help save Los Angeles from certain doom...seriously.
