Sudoku is a puzzle game that's based on numbers and logic that's perfect for people who like brain-teasers involving numbers, math, and strategy. The actual name "Sudoku" is a Japanese phrase that roughly translates to "digits must occur only once." The game has only recently become popular in the U.S.--it's been big in Japan for years--even though it was created by Howard Garns, an American freelance puzzle-maker.
The building blocks of Sudoku go as far back as the late nineteenth century in France. A daily newspaper in Paris starting publishing the earliest form of Sudoku puzzles, which used the same basic 9x9 grid format still used today. And although they were popular in its native country, the early renditions of the puzzle failed to attract an audience outside of France, resulting in a decline in popularity; by the first World War, it was all but gone.
It wasn't until 1979, when Garns published the Sudoku-esque puzzle "Number Place" in Dell Magazine, that the game would resurface. And by 1984, the game's popularity hit pay dirt in Japan by publisher Nikoli, who refined the rules created by Garns and was widely available to the general public.
