Skin Cancer

Prevention starts with you!

Skin cancer is thrown around in every day conversation like it isn't serious at all. On the contrary, 1 million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. There are a few things you should consider before you set your feet in the sand and jump in the water without any protection for your skin.

What are the causes of Skin Cancer?

The leading cause of skin cancer is sun exposure. When you expose your unprotected skin to the sun, the sun damages your skin like smoke does to your lungs. A lot of the time your body naturally repairs the damaged skin before genes have the chance to mutate. However, if the genes start to mutate skin cancer occurs.

The other cause of skin cancer is genetics. This only occurs in 5-10% of all cases, and can be predicted by checking your family history.

Who is at risk?

Everyone who doesn't protect his or her skin from the ultra violet rays of the sun is at risk. No matter how dark or how light you are, you can be at risk for skin cancer. However, fair skinned individuals, those who have several moles, have blonde or red hair, burn easily, freckle easily, and/or use tanning beds frequently are more at risk than others.

listen up 'cause this is my last time saying this:i under stand if
u like to go out but like mike said USE BLOCK or like unkka said
WEAR A SHIRT IF U DONT' USE BLOCK I MEAN THINK ABOUT
IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish we could go back to the time when tan was considered ugly.
It would be a life saver. Personally I try to avoid being out in
the sun during the hottest hours and I use a shirt with long
sleeves when I jog. I'd rather be hot than sick!
some people r so stupid.why?because they know the risk and still
they go out side with no sunscreen and then when they get the
cancer they act all stupid about it.myself personally, i dont wear
it, but i know the risk.think about it .
it doesn't make sence. If you know you can get skin cancer why go
out so you can get skin cancer.I mean think about it
use block! you get enough un-block color just walking to work.

and yeah....the sun rocks my world...thank mother earth for
waterproof block!

Funny, Canada has had that "slip, slop, slap" thing for years now.
I remember having nurses come in and tell us all about it.

And, not discouraging people from using sunblock, but sometimes a
bit of exposure to the sun is a good idea. Even like 3 mins, with
your hands and face just uncovered is good. Once you add SPF of
10-15, your natural vitamin D production goes down by 98%. Again,
I'm not saying to go tanning, but some sun is good for you.
SPF 10? 20? Are you serious? You should use at least SPF THIRTY!!!
And even more higher like SPF 50 if you burn easy like me.

Also, you should reapply sunblock every two hours.
