Cure for the Reality Show Overkill

As another television season has ended, some of us are left wondering what's next. According to the networks, reality TV is the only thing on television this summer. However, can there be too much of a good thing? My answer is yes.

Now don't get me wrong, I have my select picks of favorite summer reality shows such as So You Think You Can Dance and Project Runway, but I can't help but wonder: is there really a need for 24/7 reality shows? For those of us suffering from reality show overkill and are ready for a change of pace, fear not: some networks hear your pain and have stepped in to help. Several scripted shows are scheduled to debut this fall on both network and cable TV, so I have done the work for you and chosen those worth checking out.

John from Cincinnati

Air Date: June 10, 2007
Time: Sundays at 9:00 p.m.
Channel: HBO

The Low Down: HBO is famous for its innovative dramas, and with John from Cincinnati, it seems the network may have another hit on its hands. The show stars 90210 alum Luke Perry, Ed O'Neal, and Rebecca De Mornet. It focuses on an Imperial, California, dysfunctional champion surfing family whose lives seem to be cursed. However, the Yost family's misfortunes disappear once the mysterious John comes to town. When the locals question John about his whereabouts, the stranger insists he is just "John from Cincinnati." On the plus side, the show was created by the same creators of the popular HBO drama Deadwood. If you are into drama with twists and turns along the way, then this show just may be made for you.
