Love In Another Country

A Traveling Heart

When summer rolls around a lot of us dream about spending our vacation abroad in places like Europe, Central America, and other areas around the world. Thoughts of baking in the sun on a beach in Greece, drinking a cappuccino in a cafe in Poland, or scoping out attractive foreigners sail through our minds at the mere mention of an overseas vacation. Bags packed, squeezed uncomfortably next to a seat mate on the plane and considering the upcoming sites and attractions, there is one question that is often overlooked. What happens if I fall in love?

While to many of us, falling in love in another country may seem inconceivable, more a fairytale than anything else, it is in reality quite possible. Love can happen under the most unexpected circumstances and in the least likely places, especially in the heat of the summertime. For instance, one can meet their other half while taking a casual stroll through the foreign land or simply while buying something in the local supermarket. Although many may argue and say what we experience abroad resembles more of a fling than summer love they are often times mistaken. Circumstance cannot detract from the feeling of butterflies in the stomach, which rarely stray far from the truth.

The fairytale romance; however, can seldom last forever. The reality of what happens when it is time to return home must be acknowledged and discussed sooner or later. Though many may think this is the end of their foreign summer love that does not necessarily have to be the case. There are several options to keep the fire burning in this long distance love affair. Sending letters, emails, and calling the other person as much as possible until the next vacation all add the possibility of survival to an overseas romance. Two people can also have an open relationship with the person by dating other people while home and going steady once together again. There is also the off chance of changing your life around or having them change theirs by either one moving to the other's country and going to school or working there. However, when the list of possibilities slowly fades away and none seem to be effective, then there is always friendship and the silent hope that maybe someday at the right time two hearts will beat as one once more.

i dated someone from the philipines for a 6 weeks and than i found
out he was cheating on me and all along i would of never guessed
that cuz he was so sweet
Yeah, what a fairytale, falling in love with someone in another
continent >_<. It's nice to dream but one should never expect too
much. But in the bizarre chance that somehow things work out, I
don't think anyone should be afraid to take a risk. It's not about
how long the relationship lasts, it's about how much it meant. =)
