Kelly ClarksonMy December

I've been saying it for years: If I want pop give me pop, meaning that the last thing I want is the "deep thoughts" of an uber-successful pop-star writing about a "stupid-jerk" of an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend or that the media doesn't understand their "complex character traits" (the same theory applies for all forms of entertainment). The cold hard truth is that pop-stars these days come a dime-a-dozen, with a large percentage of them maintaining a career based on one facet of talent, be it a great voice or...uh...being palatable - nothing more, nothing less.
By all accounts, "Since U Been Gone" was a great song that has proven to stand the test of time. The chiming guitars paired with Kelly Clarkson's stammering vocals hit the spot for many a popular music listener, including myself. But did she own that song? Was it as a symbolic departure of her squeaky-clean American Idol roots? No, and no. It's a great song that Clarkson was smart enough to sing - nothing more, nothing less.
The closest record in overall feel to My December is Pink's genre-defiant M!ssundaztood. Where Pink was spilling her guts over AOR rockers Clarkson one-ups the spunky-punkster with a fistful of nu-garage ("Hole"), starry-eyed R&B ("Yeah") and a brooding acoustic gem that's sure to beefen-up her somewhat-ironic indie credibility ("Irving"). Still, you can audibly hear the strain of Clarkson trying to impress throughout most of My December, "Sober" being a major culprit of consciously looking over one's shoulder for acceptance.
