Aly & Aj - "Potential Breakup Song"

The two young and talented sisters, Aly & Aj, are awaiting the release of their third album, Insomniac, which features their hit single "Potential Breakup Song." The single is eccentric and upbeat, opening up with the lyrics "It took too long for you to call back / And normally I would just forget that / Except for the fact it was my birthday / My stupid birthday." The girls grab their listener's attention instantaneously with the irony of the opening verse, although it tells a sad story of an unreliable boyfriend.
Like the opening of the song, the ending is just as catchy - and even more ironic. The last lines sing, "This is the potential MAKEUP song / Please just admit you're wrong / Which will it be / Which will it be." So, the song starts out as a breakup song with lyrics claiming that "minus you, I'm better off" and yet here they are, at the end of the song leaving it up to the guy to either walk away or admit he's wrong and come back! Aly and Aj were very clever when writing the lyrics; unless you really listen in, the last verse may not be heard as it was intended.
There is a specter of sorts hanging high above "Potential Breakup Song"'s glossy pop, possibly "haunting" the guy they're talking about. Whatever the case may be, I like it. I think that the music video could have been done somewhat better, but they look like they are really just letting loose and enjoying themselves. More importantly, the girls sing with a lot of passion and meaning for a pop song. Overall, "Potential Breakup Song" is bubbly and bursting with intrigue without being too vague.
