Insight into this Japanese phenomenon

You read it from back to front, left to right and most of it was originally written in Japanese. What is it? Manga! These backwards comic books are the print version of anime and are all the rage. Finding the best series and understanding exactly how to read these books; however, can be tricky.

The different ways that authentic manga can be read often confuses beginners. Instead of reading from front to back and left to right like we do in Western-style books, manga is read from back to front, right to left. This is due to the fact that Japanese is written this way. Since most manga series are first written in Japanese the book style is kept the same to preserve the authenticity.

Now that you know how to read manga you need to know what to read and what categories series fall under the broader title. Shojo manga is girls' manga or to put it simply, "chick lit". This type of manga is generally written by women, for women. Shonen manga is for boys and is generally adventure themed. An example is Dragonball. Redisu is women's manga, while seinen is men's. Suiri is crime, murder manga, gag is humor and those are just to list a few.

You have now been taught all about how to read manga and what categories there are in manga. Next, you'll probably be looking for a few great series to read. There are many different series, but reviews of just a few are included below.

I love the recommended mangas! I loved both Fruits Basket and FMA!
And you have to realize that although reading right to left is
"backwards" to most westerners, reading right to left is perfectly
normal in Asian countries (many of my favorite comics are read
right to left since they are Chinese), and our way of reading left
to right is seen as backward.
