Insomniatic

Aly & AJ are two talented sisters who have cut their teeth on the Disney circuit for a few years and now ready to make a move to a larger crowd with their new album, Insomniatic. The girls are expected to have a highly anticipated year with this album release along with some work with MTV (they're starring in My Super Sweet 16...the movie).

"Potential Breakup Song," the first single from Insomniatic, has already hit number 38 on Billboard's Top 100 and number 11 on iTunes Top 100, which is pretty good considering the girls are still young and have a lot more to look forward to in their career.

This album differs from previous albums in that the girls are trying to draw more of a teen fan base as opposed to a pre-teen fan base. The main reason for their change in their target audience is simply because not only are they getting older, but their fans are too. They couldn't continue to write about "childish" topics forever. Plus, in creating an album with a little more depth the girls hope to be recognized as real artists. Songs on this album focus more on crushes, relationships, breakups and whatnot.

Ironically, in writing songs that are more teenage appropriate, they have plunged into the world of pop music, where it all basically sounds the same. And it doesn't really help that they aren't as recognized as let's say Britney Spears (not that they would want to be like Britney). The problem with moving to a larger fan base is that fine line between pandering for a new audience and remaining true to your music gets a bit lost and blurred out. The album is good, don't get me wrong, but there is certainly room for improvement.
