Rape on College Campuses

The Facts

As many teenage girls graduate high school it's off to college for education, friends, and fun. Many women do not realize; however, risks are high for harm to come upon them. Rape is becoming increasingly frequent on college campuses by people you would hardly suspect. Here are some scary statistics:

-One out of every four college women have experienced rape or attempted rape

-Young women between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four are four times as likely to be sexually assaulted than all other women

-One in seven college women will be raped before they graduate, and 90% will know their attacker

-One out of twelve college men in a 1988 study admitted that they committed acts that meet the legal definition of rape or attempted rape, but only 1% of them consider the behavior criminal in nature

- It is estimated that almost 25 percent of college women have been victims of rape or attempted rape since the age of 14

-"College students are the most vulnerable to rape during the first few weeks of the freshman year. In fact, the first few days of the freshman year are the riskiest, limiting the value of any rape prevention programs that begin after that. Research has shown that rapes of college women tend to occur after 6 p.m., and the majority occur after midnight"

Interesting. I wish that the article had gone into a little bit
more detail. I wonder if most of these rapes would be considered
"date rape" or if these women are being attacked out of no where.
I'm assuming it's more likely date rape.

I think that these rapes are probably happening at parties. Girls
go off to college, start drinking and probably drink too much.
Maybe they don't know their limit or just want to have fun. Maybe
guys are using drugs to dope the girls up, maybe they are so
inebriated by alcohol that they aren't really aware of what's
going on. Either way, it's rape.

Women need to be educated, but men also need to learn when enough
is enough. I cannot believe that so many guys think that it's
okay to have sex with a really drunk woman. I mean, you can be
drunk and want sex, but you can also be so drunk that you're out
of it and don't know what's going on. That's wrong.

Also, I have been in situations with friends who think that it IS
okay to go off alone. They are totally out of it, but insist that
they're okay. Obviously they are not okay. I think it's far
better to risk having a pissed off friend than a raped or even
murdered friend.

Keep track of each other when you're out and go with your
instinct.
