For the thrills and chills issue, it seemed only appropriate to discuss a dating practice that is able to both heat you up and leave you cold. The practice of "hooking up," a term that is ambiguous even by definition, has left many a kiwi whipsawed by confusion. Although teens have grown up with the notion that hooking up is the golden standard of dating shouldn't there be some distrust of a practice that leaves the love lorn scratching their heads? That first spontaneous kiss at a party or a social gathering may get you all riled up, but the lingering question remains, what comes next? The term itself can mean anything from locking lips to knocking hips so it could be expected that the aftermath is equally vague.
In high school, I distinctly remember my mother wondering why I didn't have more dates. She was under the impression that I was starved for the attention of the opposite sex. When I had my first serious boyfriend in college, whom I dated for over 2 years she said to me, "Don't you think you should have dated more before being so committed?" I kept my mouth shut, biting my lip to keep myself from saying something that would destroy her picture perfect image of me.
It's not that I had been doing things other high schoolers hopped up on hormes had not been doing, in fact I was more tame than most of my peers, it was simply that we were all doing something NO ONE was doing when our parents were our age. That something is hooking up. Many teens could probably tell their parents they were going to go hook up with Aaron at a party. Their mother or father would probably just shoo them out the door and tell them to get home before curfew. As they called out "drive safe!" they would wrongly assume Aaron would and you would meet up and discuss the antics of your wacky classmates and zany teachers. "Kids these days," your mother would sigh. Kids these days, indeed. In reality, you and Aaron are playing a raucous game of tonsil hockey on a couch in someone's basement where those aforementioned wacky classmates of yours are doing much of the same. Hey, at least you were honest?
