The Pipettes: We are The Pipettes

This Trio Reivents the Girl Group Tradition with a British Flavor

We are The Pipettes bursts out of the gates with the titular track that answer three very important questions: Who are they? The Pipettes. Do they have any regrets? Nope. What haven't we noticed? That they are the prettiest girls you've ever met.

The truth is with that you know everything you need to know about the group. They are an abashedly fun group of attractive British girls. The group is actually the brain child of Monster Bobby, a British promoter, DJ and solo artist who wanted to create a girl group in the style of the 1950's groups that garnered such an overwhelmingly positive reaction back-in-the-day.

The result is a group of ladies that every (hipster) girl wants to be and every (hipster) guy wants to be with. Their music is a reflection of this fun and tongue-in-cheek concept, creating songs that are true listening pleasures without any of the possibly expected guilt.

The album is packed with songs that are undeniably good and completely stay true to the genre they are paying homage to. Singles "Your Kisses are Wasted on Me" and "Pull Shapes" are immediately catchy and exciting and not without a good dose of hand-clap induced rhythms that send you back to the sock-hop days.

These songs make it apparent that the girls have a lot of substance to go along with their signature style of music and polka-dot influenced fashion. Still the true star of the album is the unique harmonies the girl's put in every song. The best of which is the breakdown of "Dirty Mind," where the girls are perfectly in sync yet still are able to have all of their personalities stand out.

We Are the Pipettes truly subverts the girl group archetype is by modernizing not only the sound but also the point of view. The Pipettes are strong, independent women for the post-Sex and the City generation of females. They speak of real girl power, much greater than the hollow, pre-turn of the century, Spice Girl rhetoric. The female is in control in every song, epitomized by the double-standard exploding "One Night Stand," where Pipette, RiotBecki revels in her exploitation of a member of the opposite sex, concluding quite harshly "Leave me alone, you're just one night stand."

At the end of the day though, this isn't message-based music. It is music as entertainment, plain and dry. If you like fun, then listen to this album, many times. If you don't like fun turn off your computer, take a good look at your reflection, then bang your head against the keyboard until you can force yourself to turn that frown upside down.

ahh..as a big fan of the girl groups of the 50's, I was interested
to see how The Pipettes sounded. Their music is fun, infectious,
and really good! It makes you want to get up and dance, and at
the same time it retains that funky 50's feel of the best girl
groups of that time.
I only just heard of them for the first time about a week ago but
I like 'Pull Shapes'. It's just plain fun, and I think that that's
what they're supposed to be all about. Tuneful fun :D
