The Welsh rockers Stereophonics, featured in the last issue of Kiwibox, welcome a new album that seems to be the result of all their previous works combined.Pull the Pin is a mix of powerful ballads, heavy guitars and Kelly Jones' trademark- his husky vocals. Add to that, melodic lyrics that make the album a darker version of the three.
"Soldiers Make Good Targets" was is the first track off of Pull the Pin. The song is a great segway into how the rest of the album will sound: a bit melodic with also a Nirvana-esque sound.
"It Means Nothing," the album's second single was inspired by the 7/7 London Underground bombs and tells us what really is important in life. The following, "Bank Holiday Monday" was the first single and it shows a more modern version of the bands sound.
While in "Word Gets Around", Stereophonics' debut album, Jones used to write about small town tales, the new track "Daisy Lane" showcases his new London life and the boy that was murdered for his mobile phone on the street where he lives.
In "Stone" and "Lady Luck," you can hear the passion in Jones' voice, while in "Drowning" you can feel his anger with slightly disturbing vocals.
In between all the coruscating guitars and strong drum beats, there's the acoustic "Bright Red Star," that follows the sound of Jones' solo album Only the Names Have Been Changed.
In 2003, You Gotta Go There to Come Back, bands fourth album, was said to be "a solid rock effort and, in due time, the band will have its epic."
Could their latest Pull the Pin be it?
