There are very few artists that can say that they have had a No.1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as the No.1 Hot Digital Song AND a No.1 Hot Rap Track all in the same week, especially artists who are only 17-years-old. Soulja Boy is the exception. Soulja Boy, born DeAndre Way is an A-Town native but has caused quite a ruckus all over the world with his infectious first single "Crank That (Soulja Boy)." The song has actually taken on a personality all its own complete with a Soulja Boy dance (accompanied by an instructional video on YouTube) and a rockin' remix by former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker.
For this young Soulja, the A-Town melting pot of music and southern soul wasn't the right place for Way to build his music. After some financial strains living with his mother in Atlanta, Way moved to Mississippi, when he was in the eighth grade, to live with his father. With the move, Way gained access to a computer, the internet and a video camera to film his soon-to-be-famous dance moves.
While in Mississippi, Way met fellow classmate Arab and formed The 30/30 Boys, the duo began recording songs and releasing them onto a website called SoundClick, where people can comment, rate and download songs. After a good response Soulja Boy developed his own website www.souljaboytellem.com to make more of a name for himself. With the success of I-tunes and MySpace it is no wonder that Soulja Boy's song became such a hit. With his signature shades, catchy beats and poppin' dance moves it would only be a matter of time before the Soulja Boy bubble finally burst.
