One in a Million

Avoid those mass-produced costumes this year by creating your own!

Count them off: five sexy cops, three trashy Britney's and ten cats, all in the same room at the Halloween party you just arrived at. What is it about the cliche, sexy costumes that have people going nuts every year? What's the appeal of a store-bought costume that you know a million other people will have? This year, try making your own.

I never took my mother seriously when she'd preach about when she was younger and had to slave over her own costume.
It was, three years ago when I was tired of going as a cat for a lack of a better idea. I decided I wanted to be a fairy and would end up only buying the wings- everything else was going to come from me.

I went to a home goods store (like Michael's or Jembro) and bought pink and purple curtains. I cut them so they looked shredded and made a flowing skirt that I attached to lavender, silky cargo pants. White Christmas-tree netting with sparkles went nicely wrapped tight over my black shirt. Rhinestones glued to my face, lots of cool ethereal makeup and my jumbo-sized wings screamed, "Look at me!" As I passed by a girl on the street with the same wings, her friend asked her, "How come yours doesn't look like that?" Even if you want to go as something as common as a fairy, put hard work into it and make it your own creation.

Going as a couple with someone else? Try fun Disney couples with your own twist (Alice & the Mad Hatter, Prince Eric & Ariel the mermaid). Need a great group idea? Get three girls to go as the Three Little Pigs and have a guy friend be the Big Bad Wolf. Not sexy enough? Think again: My two girlfriends and I grabbed above-the-knee silk, pink Victoria's Secret robes and paired them with high heels, cute curly tails and pigs' ears.

If you need some inspiration for unique ideas, look into old movie and music stars, fairy tales, historic figures, or board games (I've been trying to convince my friends to go as the characters from Candy Land for four years now). You can find great costume clothing at vintage shops, or, if you are experienced with sewing, go to a fabric store and buy supplies to make your own costume (I plan on doing that this year for my boyfriend and me to go as Tinkerbell and Peter Pan).

When you walk into your next party with a costume you made yourself you'll feel confident and assured that no one else will have the same carbon-copy from Party City. Not only will it be sexy, but it will be SMART. No costume could mask that deadly combination.
