The Perfect Mascara: A Real Eye-Opener

My search for the perfect lifting, plumping and lengthening mascara

Mascaras are so personal, more than lipgloss and even more than foundation. There are so many out there in so many colors and with so many effects, yet they are all working toward the same common purpose: thick, long, lashes.

Everyone wants perfect lashes and will go to such extreme measures to obtain them. I've been hunting for the right mascara for over a year and I've finally found one that really works, along with a few others that came pretty close. The best thing about it? It won't break the bank!

There's a lot of hoopla over designer cosmetics and some of them do have their perks. You don't want to go cheap on a foundation that's covering your skin every day, and you'll tend to splurge on a lipstick if it promises to stay all day. I thought the same thing about mascara: I wanted one that didn't flake, and didn't damage my lashes. After sifting through the Dior's, Lancome's and Chanel's (which definitely worked, but not as good as I thought they would) I tried CoverGirl's Volume Exact mascara ($8.00, drugstores nationwide). A few swipes and I was hooked...addicted, even. The brush bristles are flexible, so they won't clump during application. The separation was amazing, and my eyes looked more open and awake than ever before.

Mascara Application Tip: To really get the most out of your mascara, be sure to apply it to the root of your eyelash, wiggling the brush as you move it upwards. The root is the most important part because it's where the weight of your lashes is held so you want to get them to start swooping up as close to the base as possible.
