Striking Out in Hollywood

What the strike means for your favorite shows.

On November 5th, two labor unions called the Writers Guild of America East and the Writers Guild of America West went on strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The WGA, which consists of about 12,000 writers, want their fair share of new media distribution profits. The writers feel that they should be compensated 2.5% of all new media distribution, which includes all downloads and Internet sales of their work. So far, this proposal has been rejected and the strike has no clear end in sight.

GIVE THEM THEIR MONEY
I think the writers deserve as much pay as the actors. Without the
writers, the actors have nothing to act with and these companies
would have nothing to make money off of.

However, if any of these companies (including movie production
companies) really want to continue business, they could easily do
it by getting indie writers to do the work.

Part of the reason for the strike (or so I've heard from a few
people) is that these writers get paid the same low paycheck every
week for doing the same storyline with different characters every
week. They're tired of having to write the same thing over and
over. Bringing in indie writers could bring in so much more talent
rather than having to rely on the same old stuff from the same ol'
writers. Bringing in indie writers could be a good thing for the
industry.

However, I don't think that FOX should continue Family Guy without
Seth McFarlane. He created the show and he does almost everything
for the show (writing, voices, etc.). It's unfair to take
someone's work and and do that without their permission (of
course, there probably was a contract issue here, but
never-the-less...)
Thanks InkForBlood. Well, if even the actors are supporting the
strike, the producers are going to have to give in soon enough
(hopefully). How pathetic of them. yes, 4 cents each for each DVD
is a big increase due to the number of writers and DVDs
sold/movies and series downloaded, but the writers deserve it and
they're not really asking for much.
A few others who are supporting the strike:

Diane Neal (Law & Order SVU)
Tina Fey
David Duchovney (The X-Files)
Ray Romano
oh btw, my post was in response to your questions Bj
The producers at NBC, ABC, CBS

And they only want a 4 cent increase for God sakes. The networks
need to get their heads out of their asses and realize they're
nothing with out the writers.
Meaning, they are probably the most important people working on
the shows.
It's ridiculous for them to get 3-5 cents per DVD sold. As Heigl
said, without the writers there are no shows ot movies! They are
probably the most important people. I think that they should get
their raises, they definitely deserve it. The writers are a
talented and hardworking bunch.
By the way, who is it that won't allow them a pay rise? Who is it
who decides these things? I don't actually know...
