This Is My Letter to the World

A First Person Account of a Magnificent American Poet

All my life, I never trusted anyone. I always preferred to live in solitary confinement. I was born in Amherst, Massachusetts on December 10th, 1830. Many today describe me as one of the greatest poets in American history. Hm. I am not so sure.

On the contrary, in my time, no one took any interest in my poetry, as it often was considered controversial, not proper for the time. But then again, I guess, what did they know? I grew up in a conservative, Orthodox Christian household. Therefore, I was prohibited to read great, controversial works of my time including writing by the great Walt Whitman. Today, I see that I am compared to him frequently, which I find very ironic. I attended Amherst Academy, which was an all-girls boarding school, but I became homesick very soon, so I went back to the warmth of my home. We had many books at home, and I had a fervent love for reading. My father was in politics so he was extremely studious, as was the rest of my family. Thus, I had a very traditional and quiet lifestyle surrounded by my wonderful world of books.
