The slogan "be cool, stay in school" is instilled into our minds at an early age. The message reigned especially true for Freddy Wexler, front man and founder of Freddy and the Dials, who is also an English major at the University of Pennsylvania. Bred in NYC, an ambitious Wexler humbly began his musical career sitting at the piano with his mother. After a few connections were made through a physical therapist, Wexler was on his way to becoming a Sony Music intern at just 16 years old, only to become a junior talent scout for Columbia Records at age 17. Somehow finding time to still do his schoolwork, Wexler, now at UPenn, recorded his bands debut album, Too Much in L.A. and is planning a Spring release. The catchy, feel good pop-rock music is reminiscent of Jet, Green Day and Billy Joel, of course with a special Freddy Wexler twist.
Signed to Virgin/EMI Wexler at the tender age of 21, Wexler has been the No.1 artist on PureVolume.com, a top MySpace band with over two million plays, performed on Whoopi Goldberg's morning radio show "Waking Up with Whoopi" while her and her co-host argued how long before the band would win a Grammy, has garnered support from Sirius Satellite Radio, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Old Navy & Gap stores as well as other bands like Maroon 5, Good Charlotte and Goldfinger.
He sat down with us on a chilly January afternoon in NYC, and answered some important questions and dropped a few names in the process.
