Fashion Week Diary

Day Eight

Fashion week was winding down, but with the constant hustle and bustle inside, outside and around the tents, it was hard to tell. I was already feeling a little sad. For the past eight days, all I had known were these white wonderfully fashion fabulous tents. It felt almost like a second home, the little cafe with the free coffee, croissants and cookies served as our kitchen, the press room complete with laptops galore was our makeshift office and the cluster of grey leather benches became our living room, well aside from the two huge Mercedes-Benz on display.

I quickly dismissed my depressing thoughts and got on line to see the first show. Tadashi Shoji is a big time name is the fashion world, and I have been a long-time fan. The lights went down and in contrary to most runway show music, Tadashi had his models walk out to something a little slower and much bluesier. His theme was entitled "the art of the fold," a tribute to "the appreciation of draped material." What he showed us was enough to make the audience appreciate whatever he wanted. Gorgeous dresses, skirts and shirts in dark jewel-toned hues paraded down the catwalk. Each was twisted, knotted, draped and folded with the most accurate sense of style. Fabric gathered in knots and charmeuse, silk, satin and organza fell in beautiful draping patterns along each model. You could tell each design would flatter someone even if they weren't 5'11 with a 24-inch waist. Among my favorite pieces was his last look--a black silk organza strapless evening gown decorated in little rosette patterns. The collection made many rise to their feet to praise the designer for all of his amazing efforts.
