We celebrate it every year, but few know where this month-long observance really came from. Who started it? When? Why February? We are here to give you some of the long-awaited answers about where black history month really came from.
The Man Behind the Scenes:
Dr. Carter G. Woodson.
Dr. Carter G. Woodson may not have had a dream, but he had another kind of ambition. Woodson loved school. In fact, when he heard rumors that a school solely for black students was to be built, a rare occurrence in the late 1800s, he made his family move to a whole different state. Unfortunately, due to his family's socioeconomic status, high school for Woodson would have to wait. In the mean time he was patient and by the time he was 17, an age where most graduate from high school anyway, he had managed to teach himself the classroom basics anyway. He went on to train to be a miner and then went on to get his high school diploma. He didn't stop there. In fact, Woodson attended three additional colleges and universities including Harvard! When he was finished with his schooling, he came to an appalling revelation. Throughout his studies, he never once stumbled upon one textbook that adequately covered the history or life of any African Americans.

see February as Black History Month. Having a black history month
is completely pointless.
