It's such an eyesore, that ugly, fat, old Nokia brick of a phone that rears it's ugly head every time you open up your desk drawer. But it almost seems like a waste, throwing out something you paid so much money for. If only there was something you could do with it.
Cell Phones for Soldiers, a non-profit organization was started in 2004 by 13-year-old Brittany Bergquist and her 12-year-old brother Robbie out or Norwell, Massachusetts. Since then, Cell Phones for Soldiers has raised over $1 million in donations. This year alone, they hope to turn discarded cell phones into over 12 million minutes of prepaid phone time so that U.S. troops stationed overseas can call their families and loved ones.
The organization, which was featured on the CBS Nightly News with Katie Couric, sends the discarded and recycled phones to a company called ReCellular, which then pays Cell Phones for Soldiers. According to the group, each cell phone can be turned into about an hour of phone time for troops.
