Scanning the magazine covers on the racks in the checkout line at the supermarket, we get bombarded with images of sexy stars and their scantily clad bodies. Most are airbrushed to perfection, but there thinly cut curves and perfect physique have replaced our definition of "sexy." Unfortunately, woman have become accustomed to this image and strive to achieve it. This understood, it is not as surprising as you might think that so many women suffer from eating disorders in the United States.
Did you know that as many as 10 million women suffer from either anorexia nervosa or bulimia in the United States alone? That is a lot of women with distorted body images and it is not nearly surprising when compared to the 80% of all women in the United States who feel unhappy with their body image. Though many of us are comfortable with our bodies, we still need to support and aid those of our sisters who have not yet reached peace with their bodies.
Though men are not singled out of the eating disorder spectrum, as many as 1 million men and boys also suffer from eating disorders in the U.S., although women tend to be victims ten times more often. For centuries, women have been little more than objects of desire, and the means for reproduction. Though in the more recent era, women have began to prove that they are also equal beings with as much strength and capability as men. Though the latter is true, women still are finding themselves the victim of eating disorders.
