Acer Unleashes Gemstone Blue

A diamond in the rough.

The only thing I knew about Acer computers before attending their big press conference on March 12th was that they were relatively affordable and straightforward. No bells and whistles or uber hip ad campaigns for this PC company. However, the unveiling of their latest product was quite the to-do. The house music and blue strobe lights were a tad off-putting, but when I realized just what the Gemstone Blue notebook could do, the fanfare was understandable.

First off, at over 9 lbs for the 18.4 inch screen model, this is no Macbook Air, nor is it meant to be. While it's sleek, slender, and, well blue, it's a lot more portly than some of its competitors. But considering the Gemstone was crafted to be the ultimate multimedia center, you might not mind a little extra bulk. More to love, right?

Basically, if you're into movies and music, then you'll be into the Gemstone Blue. It's equipped with a Blu-ray drive, an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor, and a true high-def screen with 1080p resolution that is six times the quality of standard definition. The display has a 16:9 aspect ratio, which means that you can view everything on your screen the way it's meant to be seen. Audio-wise, it has a 2nd generation Dolby home theater with super crisp and clear CineReal sound.
